USA Science & Engineering Festival
Have you ever wondered about your brain - how it works and why drugs can interfere with normal brain activity? Or how big your brain is and how it compares to brains of other animals? Come to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) activities at the next USA Science & Engineering Festival and find out the answers to these questions and much more!
What is the USA Science & Engineering Festival?
The USA Science & Engineering Festival, which began in 2010, is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math in the United States. The festival, which takes place every other year, has as its mission “to stimulate and sustain the interest of our nation’s youth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by producing and presenting the most compelling, exciting, and educational Festival in the world.”
NIDA participates with other National Institutes of Health (NIH) institutes at the NIH Pavilion with two activities, “Brains Up Close” and “NIDA Brain Derby”.
USA Science & Engineering Festival – 2016
The 2016 Festival, which took place in April, was the most successful festival yet with over 365,000 attendees! It included thousands if hands on activities focused on generating excitement about science, technology, engineering and math. Children had the opportunity to celebrate and explore science while also having fun. NIH participated by having 27 different activities as part of the NIH Pavilion, including NIDA’s two activities.
NIDA Activities at the 2016 Festival
Have you ever wondered about your brain – how it works and why drugs can interfere with normal brain activity? Or how big your brain is and how it compares to brains of other animals? NIDA’s activities at the April 2016 festival were designed to help answer these questions and many more. At “Brains Up Close,” children and their parents had the opportunity to observe, hold, and learn about real brains. At “NIDA Brain Derby,” a fast–moving and interactive game, young people tested their knowledge about the brain and how drugs can impact it.
